Oestrus means the reproductive cycle in female dogs. When oestrus occurs, we say that the animal is “in heat”. Bitches usually have their first oestrus cycle between 6 to 12 months of age. In large breeds, however, the first oestrus may only occur between the ages of 12 and 14 months. A complete cycle lasts about 6 months, with 2 oestrus cycles per year. There are countless individual variations but each bitch tends to maintain the same cycle from one heat to the next. The oestrus cycle is divided into four phases : 1-Proestrus: This first stage of the cycle begins when bleeding from the vagina is visible. This phase lasts on average between 4 to 9 days. During this period, male dogs are very attracted by the female but she will not allow them to mount. 2-Oestrus : At this stage, the female will encourage mounting by a male and conception may occur. The discharge is then more straw-coloured than red. This stage usually lasts between 4 and 13 days. 3-Diestrus and Anestrus: These two stages are periods of ovarian activity. No symptom will be apparent. A pseudo-gestation may occur during diestrus. In general, your bitch can be deemed “in heat” for about 21 days; 7 days to become so, 7 days to be “in heat” and 7 days to end this period. Even though normally conception takes place only during the period cycle, keep your pet under close surveillance (in the house is ideal) during the entire three weeks. Keep in mind that this information is based on averages only. Some females will be the exception to the rule. Consult your veterinarian if your animal does not seem to conform to the norm. Sometimes oestrus problems may be the alarm that signals other more serious problems. The sooner they are dealt with, the best it is for your pet.
